The Region I tournament that starts on Thursday will be the last one. Next year, the NAIA will use nine sectional tournaments to determine the makeup of the national championship field, instead of the existing regional and super-regional tournaments.
Instead, the Thunderbirds will be competing in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The champion of this conference will automatically qualify for one of the sectional tournaments.
The CCC will have North and South Divisions. The North Division will consist of UBC, Concordia-Portland, Corban, and College of Idaho. The South Division will include Patten (Oakland, CA), Bethany (Scotts Valley, CA), Simpson (Redding, CA), and Oregon Tech.
The conference champion will be determined by a tournament. The tournament field will consist of the two division pennant-winners and the two highest-ranked teams other than the division pennant-winners.
Lewis-Clark State continues to get an automatic bid to the national championship, so they will not compete in the CCC. However, they will continue to play the North Division teams.
