The Thunderbirds got off to another bad start, this time giving up four runs in the top of the first inning on RBI by Tyler Moore, Tyson Nelson, and Joe Pratt, and Ryan Lewis stealing home. The Thunderbirds gave up a staggering eight stolen bases (a school record), three of them by Lewis.
The Birds got one back in the third on a home run by Jordan Pandoff, but the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champions increased their lead with runs in the sixth, seventh, and eight innings.
UBC went into the bottom of the eight trailing 7-1, and things started getting exciting. The Birds sent nine batters to the plate. They loaded the bases on WOU reliever Brad Carter. Carter gave way to Chris McKim, and was greeted by Scott Webster reaching first on an error, and and Ryan Pilgrim scoring. Two more runs came in when McKim hit Pandoff and Alex White. McKim was replaced by Jared Neyens, who came in with one out, the bases loaded, and the Thunderbirds now trailing 7-5. He promptly threw a wild pitch, bringing in Webster. Sammie Starr tied it with a sacrifice fly, and the game was tied at seven going into the ninth.
Andrew LaFleur came in to pitch the ninth, and couldn't quite get out of it. With two outs, Eric Renander hit a two-RBI single, and the Wolves had a 9-7 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.
However, the Thunderbirds got the potential tying run to first base with singles by DH Nic Lendvoy and RF Mike Styrna, but LF Mike Elias hit into a game-ending double play.
Neyens got the win, and LaFleur got the loss. Styrna had a big day, going 4-5 with a double.
The Thunderbirds ended up 0-3 against GNAC opponents.
