NAIA announces new playoff format |
|

I wrote an article about it for The College Baseball Blog: NAIA announces new playoff format.
Now that you've read it, the next subject is, what does this mean for UBC?
It means that after the 2008 season, Region I will cease to exist. What will probably happen after that is, the Thunderbirds will play a Cascades Collegiate Conference schedule, which means that they will continue to play Albertson^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^hCollege of Idaho, Concordia-Portland, Corban, and Oregon Tech. Lewis-Clark State will probably go back to playing the same sort of independent schedule that they played prior to 2007.
However, the four CCC members plus UBC falls one team short of the six teams that are required for the conference chanpion to get an automatic bid. They will have to look further south to get that sixth team. That probably means Simpson University, a Christian school with 1,200 students in Redding, CA, or Patten University, a Christian school with 700 students in Oakland, CA. Simpson is a long bus ride, and Patten is a short plane flight. Patten has the stronger of the two programs, but Simpson already plays Corban and Oregon Tech.
Update on Jan. 29:The scenario described in the previous paragraph isn't going to happen. The NAIA decided that conferences will not get an automatic bid unless the six baseball-playing teams are full members; bringing in a couple of baseball-only members won't do. So, all of the former Region I teams will have to qualify for the opening playoff round as independents.

Second game:
A good game, with a decent loud crowd and good intensity by both teams. The three Thunderbird pitchers had to pitch their way out of several tough jams. Offensively, they swung the bats well against the best pitching they faced all week.
Mark Hardy went 4 1/3 innings, allowed one run on five hits, walked two, struck out eight. He pitched well but got tired, due probably to his appearance on Sunday.
Greg Chong got the win with 2 1/3 innings, gave up two runs on four hits, one strikeout, one base on balls.
Andrew LaFleur got a save going 2 1/3 innings, gave up no runs on two hits, struck out three, walked two.
Offensive numbers:
- RF Matt Chester, 3-5, 2 RBI
- 2B Alex White, 2-4, 1 RBI
- 3B Bob Foerster, 2-5, 1 RBI
- SS Sammie Starr, 1-4, 2 RBI
- C Steve Bone, 2-4
- Other hits by Ryan Pilgrim, Nic Lendvoy, Jon Syrnyk (1 RBI)

A good ballgame for Team Canada.
Taylor King, making his first appearance, threw six scoreless innings for the second great start of the trip.
Jordan Anderson pitched a scoreless seventh.
Scott Webster gave up France's only runs on two hit batters and two wild pitches.
Andrew LaFleur picked up the save throwing a scoreless ninth.
The offensive hero was freshman catcher Steve Bone who hit a solo homerun in his first collegiate at-bat. He finished 2-3 with two RBI.
Third baseman Bob Foerster was 2-4 with an RBI.
The other came from Ryan Pilgrim and Fletcher Vynne.
The other RBI was by Nic Lendvoy.

Team Canada (which consists entirely of UBC undergraduates, and has a coaching staff of UBC employees) led 2-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Jon Syrnyk singled in both runs in the third inning. Starting pitcher Mark Hardy did very well; pitched six shutout innings.
Team Canada relievers Kurtis Schumacher, Jeff Hall, and Josh Brink combined to give up eight runs, two in the 7th and six in the eighth. The French were also helped by two errors in the eighth. Geoff Burke came in and got the last two outs of the eighth.
Team Canada's other hits came from Dave Dick, Sammie Starr, Nic Lendvoy, and Matt Chester. They also got a couple of good double plays.

Other news: the guys are loving it over there. They practiced on the only baseball field in the city of Paris on Saturday; let's just say they have it very good at home!
