The Thunderbirds tied it 2-2 in the top of the fifth, and it was all Warriors after that. Matt Fitts got the win, Thunderbird starter Josh Brink got the loss. The Warriors out-hit the Birds by only 10-9, but Brink threw five wild pitches, and hit five batters. The Thunderbird infield, which has been excellent so far this season, added two errors.
C Ryan Pilgrim was 3-4 for the Thunderbirds. Jeff Hall and Geoff Burke made relief appearances. CF Paul Martin was 2-2 for the Warriors, and reached base three more times by being hit by pitches.

Photo by Bob Styrna First game: Eric Brown got his second career win, holding the Hustlin' Owls to one run on three hits in five innings of work. RF Mike Styrna had another big day at the plate, 3-5 with a double and an RBI. However, the Owls did quite a bit of damage to their cause; five errors, and the Thunderbirds got four runs in the sixth inning from only one hit.
CF Jon Syrnyk went 2-3 with two RBI. DH Jordan Pandoff was 2-3. Kurtis Schumacher and Ashton Florko each pitched two innings of relief, each allowed only one hit. Starter Josh Strom got the loss for the Owls.

Second game: The Hustlin' Owls salvaged a win in the "does not count in the standings" game with a decent pitching performance by Ryan Henry, who went five innings, and allowed three runs on seven hits. The winning run came off Geoff Burke in the sixth inning; it was set up by an error by Burke, a walk, and an RBI single by 2B Ryan Mauricio.
Nic Lindsay played second base in this one, and made two very good defensive plays. He is still looking for his first hit as a Thunderbird, but he got two more RBI in this game, running his total for the season to three. Both of the RBI came on ground outs, and he also drew a walk.
SS Sean Everest was 3-4 with an RBI. Jeff Hall started, and gave up two runs on three hits in two innings. The Owls did the most damage to Sean Carrick, who was charged with two earned runs on two hits in only 1/3 of an inning. He was replaced by Greg Chong, who held the Owls hitless for 1 2/3 innings. Andrew LaFleur pitched the ninth, and got tagged for an insurance run.

Second game: Sammie Starr was 3-5, and Mike Styrna hit a two-RBI double in the first inning to get it going. Jon Syrnyk was 2-3 with two RBI, the first of which was the winning run. Matt Chester got an RBI on a fielder's choice, and made the defensive play of the game in the seventh inning in left field, robbing CF Trenton Smith of a base hit with a great catch of a line drive.
Josh Brink got the start, and gave way to Greg Chong after walking a couple of batters in the fifth. Chong came in with the bases loaded and a run in; he gave up a run on a sacrifice fly by Smith, but got the Birds out of the inning with no further damage.
Chong went 1 2/3 innings, allowed one hit, and got the win. However, the best pitching performance of the game was by Kurtis Schumacher, who retired all five batters he faced. Ashton Florko and Andrew LaFleur also saw action. Casey Burton got the loss for the Hustlin' Owls.

The final round of qualifying for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing starts Friday, in Taichung, Taiwan. RHP Brooks McNiven, Giants farmhand and UBC alumnus, is on the Canadian team. He had a start for Canada in the World Cup of Baseball in November, and did very well.
Canada's roster also includes former Lewis-Clark State star Emerson Frostad, who is now in the Rangers organization.
Update on March 9: Brooks started against Australia, and the result was a 10-5 loss. Four of Australia's runs were off Brooks in the third inning, on four hits and an error.
Update on March 14: Brooks got another start in the final game of the tournament, against Germany. (Canada had already clinched a spot in the Beijing Olympics.) This time, he went four innings, allowed no runs on two hits, struck out three, walked two. Canada won 2-1 in ten innings, and Emerson Frostad drew a walk with the bases loaded to score the winning run.

First game: Mark Hardy got his second straight complete seven-inning game. He allowed only four hits, struck out six. He held the Cavaliers' new hitting star, CF Roberto Reyes, hitless.
This game was close until the seventh inning, when the Thunderbirds erupted for six runs, led by a two-RBI double by CF Jon Syrnyk and a two-RBI single by DH Matt Chester. The winning run came in the sixth, on an RBI double by Chester. He was 4-4 with two doubles, and C Ryan Pilgrim was 3-5 with a home run. LF Nic Lendvoy was 3-4 with two doubles. One of Lendvoy's doubles was a ground-rule double that could have been a home run.
Starter Ben Rue got the loss for the Cavaliers. The Birds out-hit the Cavaliers 17-4.

Second game: The Thunderbirds got the winning runs in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by 1B Ryan Pilgrim (his second home run of the day). Kurtis Schumacher put in an excellent performance in relief, four hits and no runs in five innings of work. He should have gotten the win; the box score incorrectly gave it to starter Josh Brink. Concordia starter Zac Manor got the loss.
DH Fletcher Vynne was 2-3 with a grand slam double. 3B Sean Everest was 2-3. Andrew Lafleur got a save.
