Upcoming Games
UBC vs. TBD

NAIA Champions of CharacterFriday, 6 PM
At Nat Bailey Stadium

The Thunderbirds will play the winner of the Lewis-Clark State vs. College of Idaho game which starts at 2 PM.

UBC 15, Concordia-Portland 10
Monday, 21 April 2008

The Cavaliers got a total of 18 hits off Mark Hardy, Kurtis Schumacher, and Andrew LaFleur. It ultimately didn't matter. The Thunderbirds took advantage of five Cavalier errors, and got home runs from 1B Fletcher Vynne and LF Matt Chester.

The Birds jumped on starter Ben Rue with four runs in the bottom of the first, on Chester's homer and a two-RBI single by 2B Alex White. (UBC was the home team, because this was a make-up of a game that was originally supposed to be played in Vancouver.) They put the game away with six runs in the fourth, on a two-RBI double by C Ben Torrie, RBI singles by Vynne and pinch-hitter Jordan Pandoff, a run walked in, and one more balked in.

Vynne and Torrie were 3-6 for the game. CF Jon Syrnyk was 3-5, and White was 2-3 with three RBI. Hardy, who went five innings, got the win.

First game: A result characterized by Coach McKaig as "Our best game in a long time." Scott Webster certainly had a career-best pitching performance: he went six innings, struck out two, walked two, and hit only one batter. Kurtis Schumacher, Ashton Florko, and Andrew LaFleur took the Thunderbirds the rest of the way.

3B Bob Foerster hit a two-run home run, was 2-4, with five RBI. LF Matt Chester was 4-6 with two doubles and three runs scored.

Second game: The Owls got four runs in the second off Geoff Burke, and three runs on the sixth off Greg Chong and Jeff Hall. Hall walked in the winning and insurance runs.

3B Jordan Pandoff and CF Jon Syrnyk hit home runs. DH Scott Webster was 2-4 with two RBI. Burke got the loss, and Chad Trevison, who held the Birds to four hits over 5 2/3 innings, got the win.

First game: Derek Jacobson held the Thunderbirds to four hits, one of them a home run by Ryan Pilgrim. Starter Josh Brink was lit up with five runs on seven hits with three hit batters and a walk. (Mark Hardy was unavailable because of an exam.)

Second game: RF Mike Styrna hit a two-run home run, and was 2-3. 2B Alex White was 3-4 with two RBI, and DH Ryan Pilgrim 3-5 with two RBI.

Eric Brown got the start and the win. He went 5 1/3 innings, gave up four runs. Kurtis Schumacher, Ashton Florko, and Andrew LaFleur took the Birds the rest of the way; Florko pitched a perfect eighth inning.

LF Mike Elias, who was 2-3 with a double, suffered a badly pulled hamstring, and could be out for a while.

Corban 14, UBC 11; UBC 4, Corban 3
Saturday, 12 April 2008

First game: The Warriors scored seven runs in the sixth inning on only one hit.

The Thunderbirds appeared to be in control of this game when they scored five runs in the bottom of the second on a two-RBI single by 2B Alex White, and RBI singles by C Ben Torrie, 3B Fletcher Vynne, and 1B Scott Webster.

The Warriors came back and tied it at 5-5 with four runs in top of the third on a two-RBI single by LF Scott Flux, a run balked in by starter Eric Brown, and a sacrifice bunt by C Mitch Riddle. The game remained tied until the disastrous sixth inning.

Even though the Birds trailed 12-5, they still managed to get back in this, with four runs in the seventh on an RBI single by 2B Alex White, a big two-RBI single by pinch-hitter Steve Bone, and a Warrior error. However, the Warriors got two back in the eighth with an RBI double by 3B Nate Hiebert and an RBI single by 2B Craig Spicer. The Birds answered with two more runs in the eighth, and had the bases loaded (tying run on first, winning run at the plate) with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. However, DH Ryan Pilgrim flied out to end the game.

Jason Braun got the win for the Warriors, and Greg Chong got the loss.

Second game: This one was tied 1-1 going into the eighth inning. The Thunderbirds scored just enough runs on an RBI by pinch-hitter Jon Syrnyk, and three Warrior errors. The Warriors came back with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, and had the winning run at first base, but Andrew LaFleur came up with the save.

Reliever Kurtis Schumacher got the win, and Brandon Wolters got the loss.

Box score and play-by-play

(There is a mistake in the box score. Starter Scott Webster only went three innings, allowed three hits, one run, struck out one, and hit two batters. Schumacher went four innings, struck out one, allowed six hits, and no runs.)

Craig Spicer, Corban's leading hitter, terrorized UBC pitching. He was 6-10 for the day.

UBC 5, Corban 3; UBC 7, Corban 6 (10 innings)
Friday, 11 April 2008

First game:1B Scott Webster's two-run home run was the winning run. Corban got all their runs in the first inning off starter Mark Hardy. Hardy held the Warriors scoreless for the next five innings, and Andrew LaFleur pitched a scoreless seventh.

The Thunderbirds' other runs came on an RBI single by CF Jon Syrnyk, DH Fletcher Vynne scoring when 3B Bob Foerster hit into a double play, and an RBI double by Ben Torrie. Vynne was 3-3 with a double and two stolen bases. SS Daniel Flores was 2-3 with two RBI for the Warriors. Jordan Emery got a complete-game loss.

Box score and play-by-play

Second game:Fletcher Vynne batted in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the tenth.

Vynne's dramatic hit ended a game that was close all the way. The Thunderbirds took the early lead on a sacrifice fly by 3B Jordan Pandoff in the second inning. Thunderbirds starter Josh Brink was excellent in the early going, retiring 11 straight batters at one point. However, the Warriors manufactered runs on two consecutive squeeze plays in the fifth inning; 1B Kyle Taylor and CF Jamie McGraw got the RBI, but the one by Taylor was a fluke; a really bad bunt attempt went over Brink's head, and landed in front of the shortstop.

The Thunderbirds tied it at 2 in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double by SS Sean Everest. They took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth when RF Mike Styrna and Everest bunted in runs, and CF Jon Syrnyk hit an RBI single.

The Warriors made it a one-run ball game with two runs in the seventh on an error by 3B Jordan Pandoff. The Thunderbirds got what appeared to be, at the time, an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by LF Matt Chester.

The Warriors weren't finished, however. They tied it in the top of the ninth with a two-RBI single by 2B Craig Spicer, giving Kurtis Schumacher a blown save. They then loaded the bases on Ashton Florko in the tenth, but Andrew LaFleur came in to get McGraw to fly out and end the inning.

In the bottom of the tenth, C Ben Torrie reached on a single with one out. He was replaced by courtesy runner Mike Elias, and he moved to second when Chester grounded out. He was batted in by Vynne.

By retiring the only batter he faced, LaFleur got the win. Daniel Flores, who moved from shortstop to the mound in the ninth inning, got the loss. Chester was 3-6 with a double for the Birds. Kyle Taylor was 2-3 for the Warriors.

First game:Starter Ben Rue got the win for the Cavaliers, Geoff Burke got the loss. The Cavaliers had their way with Burke and starter Mark Hardy, and led 10-0 after 4 1/2 innings. However, the Thunderbirds got back in the game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth, led by a two-RBI double by 1B Scott Webster. The Birds got three more in the bottom of the sixth when LF Matt Chester came in on a double play, and 2B Alex White hit a two RBI-single. This got the Thunderbirds to within one run, but that was the closest they got. The Cavaliers got an insurance run in the top of the seventh off Kurtis Schumacher.

SS Nic Lindsay got his first hit of the season. Webster and White were 2-3, and White had three RBI.

Box score and play-by-play

Second game: Ross Conway went seven innings, held the Birds to seven hits and three earned runs, got the win.

This one was close all the way. The Thunderbirds got the early lead in the bottom of the first on a two-RBI double by RF Mike Styrna. The Cavaliers went up 5-3 in the top of the sixth, and got the winning run in the seventh on an RBI single by C Ryan Sussenguth. The Birds closed to 6-5 with a run in the bottom of the eighth, but missed an opportunity to do some serious damage. Styrna hit what should have been a double down the right field line. However, the UBC base coaches didn't see where the ball went, and held up the runners at second and third. The result was that Styrna got caught between first and second base.

1B Scott Webster was 3-4 with a home run.

Reliever Greg Chong got the loss. Josh Brink started, went 5 2/3 innings, allowed six hits, three earned runs, and struck out five. He retired 11 straight batters.
