Thunderbird alumnus and RHP Brooks McNiven has been named to Canada's roster for the 2009 Baseball World Cup (not to be confused with the World Baseball Classic and the World Baseball Challenge). Brooks played for Canada in the 2008 Olympics. He was on Canada's roster for the World Baseball Classic, but didn't get into a game.
He had 13 starts with the Class AA Connecticut Defenders this season, but was released at the end of June. His record was 1-4, 4.84 ERA.
Sept. 12: Brooks got a win by pitching the first four innings of a game against Sweden that was mercy-ruled after five innings with Canada leading 19-1. His numbers were three hits, one earned run, two strikeouts. The run came on a home run in the first.
Sept. 18: Brooks got a complete game and his second win against Netherlands Antilles. The score was 19-2, and it was shortend to six innings with the mercy rule. He allowed four hits, struck out five, walked none.
Sept. 24: Brooks got the start and a no decision in an 11-5 win over the Netherlands. He went four innings, allowed five runs on six hits, struck out three.
Sept. 26: Canada defeated Puerto Rico 6-2 to win the bronze medal. This was Canada's best-ever finish in this tournament.
The USA and Cuba play on Sunday for the gold medal.
Brooks' numbers for the tournament were 2-0, 14 innings pitched, 10 strikeouts, 5.14 ERA.
