SS Sammie Starr hit a home run, stole a base, and went 3-4. He open the game by getting hit by a pitch and scoring when DH Mitch Grossell reached on an error. He also made an excellent defensive play on a ground ball in the fifth inning.
Starr was upstaged defensively by 2B Alex White two innings later. White caught a fly ball in foul territory on the first base side. He then made a perfect throw to third base to catch a baserunner who had tagged up at second after the fly out. LF Nic Lendvoy, who was injured for most of the 2008 season, went 2-3 with three RBI. Grossell, who had only one at-bat during the 2008 season (he batted 1.000), went 2-5 with two RBI. CF Jon Syrnyk went 2-3 with an RBI. Team Canada missed a chance to end it early when they left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with a 10-6 lead. Generally shaky pitching by Team Canada kept the game close. The Warriors got a run in the top of the ninth on a walk, a hit by 2B Escobar, a wild pitch by reliever Ashton Florko, and a sacrifice fly by CF Chris Valencia. Florko was replaced by Eric Brown with two outs. Brown walked the first batter he faced, bringing 1B Murray and the tying run to the plate. The game ended when Murray hit a fly ball to deep left field that might have gone out if the wind hadn't held it up. Starter Mark Hardy got the win. He went five innings, allowed four runs on five hits, struck out five. Matthew Bannister of Newfoundland pitched the sixth and seventh, allowed two runs on three hits. Florko came in in the eighth. Warriors starter Dustin Willis got the loss. Box score and play-by-play Comments (0) | Add as favourites (82) | Views: 298
