Jeff Tobin was greeted with a two-run home run in the first inning by Alberto Cruz, son of former Astros star Jose Cruz. The Bulldogs were clearly the better team in this one. They got a good performance from starter Karl Mejlholm of Nanaimo. He went seven innings, allowed six runs on six hits, and struck out four.
The Thunderbirds trailed 9-3 after five innings. Their best chance to get back in the game was in the sixth, when Mejlholm had some control problems, and the Birds had the bases loaded with no outs. Ian Prescott hit into a double play. UBC still got a run in, but, it the words of Bulldog coach Woody Hunt, "He gets a base hit there and, man, it's anybody's ball game."
One highlight for the Thunderbirds came in the third inning, when Adam Campbell made a throw to home plate to nail a baserunner. Johnny Yiu was 2-4 with an RBI; he was the only Thunderbird with multiple hits. In the later going, Andrew LaFleur pitched two perfect innings, and Joey Benda had a three-up three-down inning.
There was a lot of good coverage in Wednesday's Lewiston Tribune, and I'll try to pass some of it along later.
