Calligraphic encouragement for Johnny Yiu - Photo by Wilson Wong This game was close for five innings. The Thunderbirds got a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by Connor Janes, and another run in the fourth on an RBI double by Richard Smythe. They led 5-1 after five innings, scoring three runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Adam Campbell, a squeeze bunt by Brendan Kornberger, and an RBI single by Smythe. The Thunderbirds broke it open with seven runs in the sixth; Davey Wallace hit a two-RBI single, Brett Murray had two hits and an RBI, and Janes and Campbell had RBI singles.
The game was stopped with the mercy rule after seven innings, and the final play was an unassisted double play by Wallace. Doug Grant got the win. He scattered six hits, allowed one run, struck out four, walked three, and hit one batter. Dave Pasquali pitched the seventh inning, and allowed the Eagles' other run.
Photo by Wilson Wong John Tundis pitched the first five innings for the Eagles, and allowed five runs on seven hits. Most of the damage was done to Ryan McKibben and Cody Wilkinson. Although the Eagles were only charged with two errors this time, they continued to hurt their cause with mistakes. They had two baserunners caught trying to steal second, and one of the attempts was nowhere near close. One of the many runs given up by McKibben came when he hit a batter with the bases loaded.
This game drew a record 430 spectators. The Thunderbirds are now 11-0 in post-season play at Nat Bailey Stadium.
